Objectives
. Interpret aviation technical documents written in English.
. Write texts in English or in the native language based on the reading of texts in English.
. Translate texts from English to the native language or translate texts in the native language to English.
The Importance of the Course
Learning English is a necessity worldwide, and within aviation, having proficiency in English is essential for every professional. The English language shall always be available in the aviation environment.
However, according to ICAO Doc 9835 - Manual on the Implementation of ICAO Language Proficiency Requirements/First Edition, 2004, “learning a language is more complex than the familiar use of our own native language in our daily lives often leads us to believe”. The Document also affirms that “language learning (is) a complex blend of skill, knowledge and cultural awareness, combining physical components with mental and communicative processes.”
It is true that different aviation professionals must know English at different levels, varying from the basic to the advanced level. In addition, it is true that each career presents a different challenge in terms of terminology and language specifications. Flight crews and air traffic controllers, for example, need to understand phraseology in English as to guarantee efficient and safe communication, but it is certain that aviation English training should not be limited to phraseology even for these professionals.
It is important to mention that the learning of a foreign language involves four skills: reading, writing, listening and speaking. The need for acquiring one, a part of or all of them depends on professional necessities. We can affirm, however, that reading and understanding are very important and common skills required for the development of civil aviation daily activities.
Not forgetting about the diversity of professions and of language training needs aforementioned, aviation personnel should learn and understand basic aviation terms in written English in order to guarantee they truly comprehend what they read, this way avoiding misunderstandings that would compromise safety.
For non-native speakers of English, the ability to read and understand technical vocabulary has proved to be a challenge besides being a career requirement. Unfortunatly the misunderstanding of the English language has caused negative consequences for aviation and attention has been given to the role of communication.
Target Population
The secondary target population is composed of professionals working in the aviation industry who are not native speakers of English.
Prerequisites
. To pass an online placement test offered by ANAC with at least Grade 8,0.
. Computer skills.
